Certifying the commons: eco-certification, privatization, and collective action Ecology and Society
Foley, Paul; Environmental Policy Institute, Memorial University, Grenfell Campus; pfoley@grenfell.mun.ca; McCay, Bonnie; Department of Human Ecology, Rutgers the State University; mccay@AESOP.RUTGERS.EDU.
We examine new dynamics of privatization and collective action in common pool resource situations facilitated by the nonstate multistakeholder institutions of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the global leader in sustainability certification for wild caught seafood. Through a review of the literature and two case studies of fishing cooperatives in Baja California Sur, Mexico and on Fogo Island in the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), we advance two interrelated arguments. First, certification and eco-labeling institutions privatize fisheries governance in largely unexamined ways through the injection of new forms of exclusive rights or privileges into common pool resource situations already complicated by access and property...

Distribution, prevalence, and genetic analysis of Panulirus argus virus 1 (PaV1) from the Caribbean Sea ArchiMer
Moss, Jessica; Behringer, Donald; Shields, Jeffrey D.; Baeza, Antonio; Aguilar-perera, Alfonso; Bush, Phillippe G.; Dromer, Clement; Herrera-moreno, Alejandro; Gittens, Lester; Matthews, Thomas R.; Mccord, Michael R.; Schaerer, Michelle T.; Reynal, Lionel; Truelove, Nathanial; Butler, Mark J..
The pathogenic virus Panulirus argus virus 1 (PaV1) was first discovered in Caribbean spiny lobsters Panulirus argus from the Florida Keys (USA) in 1999 and has since been reported in Belize, Mexico, and Cuba; its distribution in the wider Caribbean is unknown. We collected tissue samples from adult spiny lobsters from 30 locations in 14 countries bordering the Caribbean Sea and used molecular diagnostics to assay for the presence of PaV1. PaV1 occurred primarily in the northern areas of the Caribbean, where its prevalence was highest. The virus was not found in lobsters from the southeastern Caribbean, and its prevalence was lowest in the southwestern Caribbean. DNA sequence analysis was performed on a fragment of the viral DNA to examine the genetic...

La pecherie de langouste rouge en Corse ArchiMer
Marin, Jean.
The european red spiny lobster, Palinurus elephas, is the main target species of the small-scale fishery in Corsica. The fishery is described fleet, fishing areas, fishing strategy and fishing gear ; fishing effort, yield, c.p.u.e, and complementary.catches ; resource condition. Its specific problem, the economic overfishing, is analysed. Finally, it has been tried to assess the fishing regulation impact (minimum market size, fishing seasonal close, fishing sanctuaries).

Modelling an ITQ Scheme in the Galapagos Marine Reserve Spiny Lobster Fishery AgEcon
Alvear, Santiago A. Bermeo.
This paper assesses the distributional and economic impacts resulting from a hypothetical individual quota management system in the Galápagos spiny lobster fishery. Using data from the Fisheries Monitoring Programme, an implicit function is derived and evaluated at a total allowable catch to estimate an equilibrium price for quota. By comparing this with each vessel-owner's implicit quota price, the number of fishers who will have an economic incentive to sell quota is estimated. The outcomes of the model indicate that the equity implications, as well as the economic benefits, resulting from the introduction of an ITQ system would be significant.

Morphology of the male gonads of the spiny lobster Panulirus laevicauda (Latreille, 1817) BABT
Lima,Ana Valêsca Pinto de; Gesteira,Tereza Cristina Vasconcelos.
The present study represented a contribution to the knowledge of the cytological and histological aspects of decapods' reproductive system, describing male germ cells of the spiny lobster Panulirus laevicauda. Seventy-one specimens of different sizes were caught off Fortaleza (Ceará, Brazil). Their testes were removed and fixed in Bouin solution, then, after 24 hours, dehydrated, cleared and embedded in the paraffin. Sections (4 µm thick) were stained with hematoxylin-eosin. The testes appeared macroscopically as a pair of long and highly convoluted tubes joined by a transversal commissure giving the organ an H-like shape. Microscopically, supporting cells and germ cells (spermatogonia I and II, spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa) were seen in the...

Pêche de la langouste rouge Palinurus elephas en france. Eléments pour fixer une taille marchande ArchiMer
Latrouite, Daniel; Noel, Philippe.
From the end of XIX century to the 1950', spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas) fishing has been an important economical activity for potters of Brittany and led to landings over two thousands tons. Later, impoverishment of traditional fishing grounds and closure, to French fleet, of foreign fishing area obliged a reconversion of potters toward crabs (edible crab and spider crab). Recently in the 80', development of a netting activity has restarted catches of spiny lobster (at a modest scale). Presently, the only reglementary measure concerning this species/metier is a national minimum legal size (total length) but European Commission has wished that a European MLS would be established. In that aim, this paper presents the main features of spiny lobster...
